Laurus nobilis, commonly known as Bay Laurel or Sweet Bay, is a slow-growing evergreen tree prized in ornamental gardens for its dense glossy foliage, elegant form, and aromatic leaves. Native to the Mediterranean region, it is highly versatile and can be grown as a specimen tree, clipped hedge, patio container plant, or formal topiary, making it especially popular in classic and contemporary landscape designs. Bay Laurel thrives in well-drained soil and sunny, sheltered positions, tolerating pruning exceptionally well and maintaining year-round structure and colour. Mature plants can reach 6–12 metres if left untrimmed, though they are often kept smaller for decorative purposes. In addition to its ornamental appeal, the fragrant leaves are widely used in cooking, adding both practical and sensory value to gardens.
